I stuck in croutons at the end around the sides upside down to help me keep my bag of apples in!
I stuck in croutons at the end around the sides upside down to help me keep my bag of apples in!

As I typed this list I keep seeing things I should of stuck in!  Be sure you take this list and make note of what you’d like to include!  Don’t forget to use those Tetris skills to get as much as you can!

Tips:

First, put the boxed produce in the bottom as your base like strawberries & blackberries.

Second, use smaller produce like avocados or oranges to squeeze into the open spaces throughout the bag.

Thirdly, don’t be afraid to pile on the top.  Use items like the croutons to add some height to the bag.

Fouthly, bring your reusable bag with handles and put the brown paper bag inside it.  This will make it easier for you to carry and load in the car (as the bag gets pretty heavy and difficult to transport).

Lastly, ENJOY!

Pagoda Appetizers

As a BzzAgent, I had an opportunity to try the Pagoda Brand Appetizers recently.  When I saw this opportunity I jumped at the chance since crab rangoon is my FAVORITE food!
After picking up my free trial at Kroger, I opened the box and cooked it for an afternoon snack.  Now, I consider myself a bit of an expert on crab rangoon.  Not only do I always order it when going to a Chinese restaurant, I also make my own (which is a family favorite).
Although the Pagoda Crab Rangoon was good, it wasn’t my first choice.  I like to have more cream cheese and less crab taste.  I do love the fact it is something that I can purchase and leave in the freezer and when they craving hits pull it out, cook it, and enjoy.  I also appreciate the price.
If you love Chinese food, I’d recommend trying the many  different Pagoda appetizer products.

Couponing For Christ: Thanksgiving Baskets

My church works hand in hand with Hope Ministries here in Northern Kentucky.  Hope Ministries provides food, clothing, and other help to those in need while sharing the love of Jesus Christ.  It is a wonderful ministry and every year a few weeks before Thanksgiving the members of Florence Baptist Church on Mt. Zion and Hope Ministries join forces to gift Thanksgiving Food Baskets to those in need.

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
-2 Corinthians 9:5

This is my first year to provide a basket as an Extreme Couponer.  In the past we have always donated a basket of goods for about $30.00-$35.00.  We usually go to a discount type of store to grab the necessary items, hoping to save money.  This year I hoped to get everything for my basket under $20.00.

Now, before I got started, I prayed about this basket and asked the Lord to help me through this venture.  My husband has recently changed careers and in this transition our budget has had to make drastic changes for my family’s living expenses.  Making it more difficult to give like we have in the past.  But the best thing about calling on God, is seeing Him work and work big.  Seeing what God can achieve on a tight budget is truly amazing.

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”
-Hebrews 13:16

Full disclaimer, I didn’t purchase everything at one time or from one store.  It is best to purchase items throughout the year especially if you know this is an area of giving that occurs every year.  It is always a great idea to shop clearance items or great sales and stock-up on items you may use or give in the future.

So, first I take note of any items I already have in my cabinets, like a box of Tea Bags.  I purchased a box earlier in the year with a Kroger sale, coupon, and Ibotta rebate making the Tetley Brand Tea FREE.

Then I started to scan the ads and match-up deals and coupons to get great deals.  I have posted each deal on shoppingwithshana.com.  Click the links listed below for specific details.

Items needed for each basket (meat is provided):

TOTAL COST: $19.63

God showed me His glory by allowing me to take care of both my family and a family in need over Thanksgiving.  In fact, God showed his glory throughout our church as we donated over 550 Thanksgiving Baskets.

Why You Should Shop Clearance

Clearance sometimes gets a bad name, there are many reasons why something is on clearance.  Maybe its close to expiration or maybe it has a small flaw or maybe its just overstocked in the store and they want to unload.

Whatever the reason, whenever I go shopping one of my very first stops is the clearance section.  Its where I find some GREAT deals and even FREEBIES when I pair with a coupon or rebate app.

Sweet PotatoesThis can of sweet potatoes was on the clearance shelf of my Krogers.

Why?

Well, its good for another year.  The only think I saw wrong was the fact it has a dent in it.  I’m currently preparing a Thanksgiving Basket to donate and this is the best price I’ve seen on a large can of sweet potatoes.

Sweet!  (no pun intended)

Couponing for Christ: Operation Christmas Child Boxes

As the Holiday season starts, there are many opportunities to give.  From dropping lose pocket change in the Salvation Army’s kettle to adopting a family or buying gifts for needy children.  One of my favorite seasonal giving opportunities is Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse.

What I love about Operation Christmas Child is how I get to teach my children about giving to others plus they get to learn by being hands on.  Since my family is on a strict budget, we have a limit on how much money we can spend, limiting the number of boxes we can afford to put together, especially if we are paying for everything full price.

So, this year, I decided to put my new couponing skills to the test and see how many boxes I could provide with minimal cost.  I normally  get 2 boxes together under $50 which includes the $7 in shipping per box, and I usually shop exclusively at the Dollar Tree.

What’s great is when you pray to the Lord and ask for His help and blessings, you get to see how God can do so much more than you can.  How He can truly bless your efforts.  This year was completely different than the past.  My family and I put together 4 large boxes, filled with more stuff than ever before, and with items that were better quality than ever before for about $5.00 give or take!

Our 4 boxes for Operation Christmas Child.
Our 4 boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

So, before we jumped in head first, we prayed.  Prayed that God would bless this venture, prayed that He will guide me, and prayed that He will bless those in need through these boxes.

Next, I needed to know what to look for.  Samaritan’s Purse has a list of suggestions.  Suggestions include: Toys, School Supplies, Non-liquid Hygiene Items, Accessories, Crafts, and a personal note.  Watch the video below to see what items I used and how I couponed.

Now, remember, couponing for Operation Christmas Child boxes is not something that you can do during the week before they are due and have major savings.  You have to catch the deals throughout the year.

Items included in our boxes:

  • Hygiene Items
    • Toothpaste
    • Toothbrush
    • Bar Soaps
    • Washcloths
  • School Supplies
    • Paper
    • Pencils
    • Pens
    • Crayons
    • Coloring books
    • Folders
    • Glue Sticks
  • Clothing/Shoes
    • Crocks
    • Flip Flops

    • Puzzles
    • Balls
    • Play Doh
    • Hot Wheel Cars
    • Kid’s Jewelry
    • Bike horns

OCC7 OCC8

I want my children to have a giving heart and I look at these opportunities as great way to teach them to care about others.  There are great printables for kids to color and fill out showing the child that will receive the box more about the family that provided them.

OCC3 OCC2 OCC4

Finally, we took our finished boxes to a local Chick Fil A that was collecting boxes.  The Chick Fil A also matched each box up to 100 boxes.  They gave a free Chick Fil A chicken sandwich for every box PLUS they paid for the shipping of each box (which was a $28 savings for my family!)

God is GOOD!

BzzAgent: Crest Complete with Sugar Shield

I’m excited to bring a new series of posts to you from a new adventure with BzzAgent.com.  This is a fun way to try out new products, give my opinions, and offer my readers coupons to try it for themselves as a BzzAgent.

My first product that I’m “bzzing” about is Crest Complete with Sugar Shield.

20

I have been using this toothpaste for a few weeks now and it doesn’t seem any different than most toothpastes.  I love the “Scope” taste and the fresh feeling it leaves in your mouth after you brush your teeth.  I also appreciate the fact that it is protecting my teeth from sugar, especially around these holidays filled with candy!

My only real criticism with this product is not having a kid friendly toothpaste.  As a mother of 2 young kids, they only use toothpaste that is fruity and tastes good, ie. nothing minty.  Since I feel like this product would be excellent for kids who LOVE sugary foods and drinks, then a taste other than minty Scope would be better.

If you are interested in trying this product for yourself, click this link to get print coupons to purchase these Crest products.

FREE Family Fun: The Robot Zoo

As a mom of a 6 and 5 year old, trying to find kid friendly free things to do can be difficult, especially as the weather gets cold and we are looking for indoor activities.

I usually try to get to the library fairly often to exchange books and videos (which side note: is another great way to enjoy books  and videos without spending a dime!).  This weekend we stopped by the Main Branch of the Boone Co. Library here in Northern, KY and enjoyed the Robot Zoo!

Robot 6
There are 3 stations around the Robot Chameleon that allow children to move the head, tongue, eyes, and change its color.

This is a completely FREE event.  Families can come into the library and check out these Robot animals throughout the building.

See how many seconds you can hang like a bat.

The exhibits are interactive for the kids from hanging like a bat to racing squids or catching flies.

Kids can change the nose, feet, and tails to design their own unique animals.

Best part is getting to learn about both animals and robots!

How to Save on Healthy Food: Produce

There are many myths to couponing and not being able to coupon for healthy food is one of the main ones.  Sure, couponing for the packaged foods containing all kinds of sugar and salt and who knows what else to keep it’s shelf life longer is easier, but it is very possible to get deals on healthy foods as well!

For more info on Myths: “Couponing Myths

I went grocery shopping this week and bought $138.92 worth of groceries and personal care products for $56.91.

Post 13

When looking at the picture be sure you notice the bananas, grapes, apples, sweet potatoes, corn, yogurt, organic juice boxes, Quorn product, and milk.  Lots of healthy, non-processed or minimally processed foods.

So here are just a few examples of ways to save on healthy foods like produce!

Post 7Produce

Fresh produce is a must in my household.  With two growing children, we do our best to give them a healthy diet.  So, in order to not break the bank, I do several things to keep the costs down.

First, I watch the sales.  If a certain brand of apples is on sale, then I will purchase those for that week.  If grapes are on sale over strawberries, then we are snacking on grapes throughout the week.  Buying only the sale items will automatically save money without using coupons!

Second I purchase produce items whole and clean and cut them myself.  A head of lettuce will set you back about $1 or less, but a bag of precut and cleaned salad will cost $3 or even $4.  Don’t be lazy- cut up your own fruits and veggies and see that savings!

Third, check out the websites of your favorite products and sign-up for the mailing lists, like Driscoll’s for berries!  They will give you coupons for being a member and more for sharing your opinion on their products!

Ibotta gives you money back on fresh produce!
Ibotta gives you money back on fresh produce!

Finally, I use rebate apps like Ibotta and Checkout 51 to get money back on fresh produce.  And the best part about it all is you can double dip in rebate apps by submitting to all that apply!

For more info on Ibotta: “Rebate App: The Ibotta Edition

Post 2For more info on Checkout 51: “Rebate Apps: Checkout 51 Edition”

And if you are unlike me and have a green thumb, then it is always a great idea to grow your own produce!  Not only can you save your family money, you can share with friends and family when the crop over produces!  That’s what I love about my next door neighbor, we have tomatoes all summer because of his little garden.

If you have another tip please share in the comments!

Making a difference one sale at a time….
